KBShimmer: Mix It Up Collection

Get out your neon, pop in your favorite mixtape, and join KBShimmer as they head back in time to when big hair, roller rinks, and trips to the mall ruled. Hotter than your crimper, six bold cream nail polish shades and a glitter topper are here to take you back. These near neon shades will launch on May 1st and can be found at KBShimmer.com and other online retailers.

Mix It Up is the perfect electric pink nail polish. Slightly redder, this neon shade leans more watermelon than bubblegum, for a hot pink shade perfect for showing off in sandals. This blacklight reactive shade is loads of fun at a glow bowl!

Totally Outrageous is a neon red-orange polish that will take you back. The vibrant coral shade leans slightly orange, ideal for warm summer days.

Let’s Bounce is a vivid chartreuse nail polish. This daringly colored shade rides the line between neon yellow and electric lime for an exceptional neon perfect for warm weather.

Roll On By is a teal nail polish that would be right at home in any roller rink. This is the only one of the bunch where one thick coat was opaque. I wore two coats for photos.

Net Gains is a nod to colorful hair spray containers of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The energetic, violet-leaning purple nail polish dries slightly darker than it shows in the bottle.

To The Max is a cornflower blue nail polish reminiscent of retro eyeshadows.

Scratch That is a nod to doodles of yesteryear. A mix of black shred, dot, mini star, and hex glitters combine to create a doodle-like look. Photos show it over the neon shades from the Mix It Up Collection. One coat over these or your other favorite shades followed by Smooth Moves and Clearly On Top will give a glass-like finish to your manicure as shown.

All of my swatches above are shown in three coats with topcoat unless otherwise stated. All photography uses a neutral color temperature bulb and white background with white bounce card. My nails are natural with no enhancements or use of blurring/cream base. I have a fairly prominent visible nail line. Please note that neon colors are not all represented in the range of hues available on electronic devices. The pink and orange especially, will not look identical to my photos when seen in person. These are very vibrant and bright neon shades.

Believe: Sound the Alarm

What? Jen is reviewing something that's not indie? Yes, indeed! I have loads of mainstream polishes, it's what my collection started with in 2008; way back when indies did not exist.

This mainstream polish from Believe is more modern though. I swatched it last year, within about week of having purchased it. I saw it in a nail group and had to have it! The reason I needed that shade is because it reminds me of a custom tailored suit my mother made for me. The fabric I chose for it was a huge floral with golds, yellows, oranges, and greens. The lining and skirt that she made to go with the coat were this bright shade of orange.

Although the polish may look more red on some devices, it is definitely orange. I'd call it a bright red-orange, kind of like the crayola. Shown below is two coats with topcoat and a photo of it with matte topcoat. The formula was very fluid, not streaky at all but I had to take care with loading the brush and application as it would easily flood near the skin.

After about four days of wear, it began chipping. This is about half the wear time I usually get from other polishes. I'm still super happy about being able to add the shade to my collection. It's a bit nostalgic, as I no longer have the suit my mom made. It's also great color for summer time which is just around the corner!

Manic Panic
More of a “bright” than a neon, this is a solid bright purple cream addition to the Neon Brights family of colors

I have been waiting for a purple to join the fam! Shown in two silky coats!

Hot Guava
A neon coral cream addition to the Neon Brights family of colors.

Shown in two coats, this polish is like if False Alarm had a baby girl. (It's pinker!)

Since device displays cannot render fluorescence, one of the best ways I have found to sort of trick the eye is by using a dark contrast. The following photos have been deliberately darkened so the polish appears to be more vivid. If you do a side by side with the above pictures, you will find that the color on the nail is identical in both!

For the inquisitive, here's why...
"An object coated with a specific daylight fluorescent pigment reflects its visible color and absorbs and transforms UV wavelengths into this color." -ACS.org DayGlo Fluorescent Pigments, 2012
What happens is, with this special pigment, UV light energy is actually added to the normally reflected color. This makes the color appear brighter, because more light is reaching your eyes. Your brain recognizes this extra light as increased color, thus fluorescent colors appear as being brighter and more brilliant!
The digital displays cannot correctly display fluorescent colors, because it outputs in RGB (Red, Green, Blue) which cannot clearly represent the hue and brightness that the human eye perceives when examining a fluorescent material.

Angel Parade
A super pigmented Gold-green-silver-blue multichrome addition to Tonic's Multichrome Parade family of colors

Shown in 1 coat. Yup. This polish is all that! Beautifully opaque and shifty.

I’m So Fresh
A new glowing mint green shimmer addition to Tonic's “I'm So Fancy” base coat line up.
The “I'm So Fancy” base coats are designed to provide additional coverage and brightness under sheer nail polish colors or can be worn all on their own for a super quick and easy manicure!

As shown on my ring and pinky, one coat gives a sheer delicate color and on my index and middle finger two coats.

Starlit Dawn
A tiny bit of scattered holo mixed with a ton of peach-red iridescent shimmer and flakes that shift to yellow and green. Lindsay describes this as a resonant, fiery, ethereal polish with a million wear possibilities!

I loved wearing it alone with three coats, but couldn't stop there. Keep scrolling for a bit of the 'million wear possibilities!'

Facet-nating
Super shifty red-gold-green multichrome flakes paired with iridescent blue flakes in a clear base

I am showing this in one coat over an aqua shimmer. I tried two coats on its own and for an opaque look, I feel that I would want at least three coats or I'd use the sponge method.
